ONE life: The Woman in Me

BBC1

Producer  / Director: Patricia Doherty

Exec Producer: Glyn Middleton

This is a story about throwing stereotypes completely out of the window.

This programme isn’t about the shock of a man realising he likes wearing women’s clothes, even the shock of the wife who finally realises where her lipstick has gone.  This is a film about cross-dressers who are “out” and about, and living life to the full…no matter what anyone thinks.

Warm-hearted and humorous this is the story of men who see themselves as roses among the Northern grit of Mansfield, and the grudging residents who are beginning to accept them.

As transvestites, Jim and John don’t want to change sex. They like being men – it’s just that sometimes they like being women too. Jim dresses up as Charlotte and John becomes Clare.

The Woman In Me follows Jim (who is 44 and married to Trish) and John (35 and divorced) at a pivotal stage in their lives. Jim is fighting to keep his job at the local council after being disciplined for talking publicly about his cross-dressing. John, who has spent most of his life keeping his cross-dressing secret, decides it’s time to come out to his family.
